Certification for Pharmacy Techs?
There is no standardized degree program or training requirements for pharmacy technicians although many colleges and trade schools offer training programs. All that is usually required is a high school diploma or equivalent. The programs last between 6 and 24 months and are held in both class and laboratory settings. Online pharmacy technician training course options are possible.
Studied subject areas include medical and pharmaceutical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy recordkeeping, pharmaceutical techniques, and pharmacy law and ethics. Customer service skills are also studied as pharmacy technicians must interact with patients, insurance companies, doctors, and other health care professionals, and students are expected to become very familiar with all currently prescribed drugs and know what they contain, how they work, side effects, and more. Strong reading and math skills are critical for this field as technicians are responsible for reading and filling prescriptions and mistakes could jeopardize a patients health and well being. Depending on the program and pharmacy technician schools you attend, upon completion students receive a certificate or an Associates Degree.
Other requirements include registering with the State Board of Pharmacy. Requirements and fees vary by state. Certification is not required but both the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) offer voluntary certification exams. Once certified, technicians must recertify every 2 years and take 20 hours of continuing education. In order to be certified technicians must have a clean criminal record.
